Volunteer Opportunities
Fall 2008

WELCOME DESK: Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays.

Welcome Desk/ Visitor Services Assistants help ensure our guests' experience at the Nature Center at Shaker Lakes is a positive one. Use your enthusiasm for the environment to greet and assist visitors, answer the phone, help with the gift shop, and prepare mailings.  
 
OFFICE ASSISTANT
Help staff with data entry, mass mailings and taking inventory. Enter Nature Center programs onto community calendars posted on the internet. These tasks may be completed at home or at the Nature Center. Assist our
Membership department by reviewing past records, compiling lists, preparing membership renewals and packets.  
 
STORM DRAIN STENCILING

Help raise awareness about the link between storm drain systems and our groundwater supply! This stenciling project shares an important message that harmful substances poured into storm drains flow directly or indirectly to our streams. FALL OUTDOOR ADVENTURE CAMPS: September 15 - October 25

Assist our naturalists with nature camps for children ages 3 to 12. Volunteers must be at least 13 years old and able to hike with young children.
 
HIKE AND RUN FOR NATURE: October 4th, 2008

Help the Nature Center staff and the community hike and run for nature!  We need volunteers to help with distribution of flyers, the set up and breakdown of the event, and the day of event activities.  The set up begins at 7:00 AM; Activities and Registrations begin at 8:00 AM; Hikes begin at 9:00 AM; Race begins at 9:15 AM.  Breakdown will begin at 10:30 AM.
 
FAMILY FUN IN THE ENCHANTED FOREST: October 24th, 2008

Help staff our signature fall family event.  Volunteer opportunities include staffing activities; setting up luminaries and trail markers; assisting with hayrides; face painting; caramel apple making and pumpkin carving.  The set up begins at 4:00 PM; event begins at 5:30 – 8:30 PM; breakdown begins at 8:30 PM.

BUILDING AND TRAIL MAINTENANCE ASSISTANT

Assist with filling bird feeders, recycling, and special building maintenance. Other landscape tasks include cleaning trail trenches and pruning as needed. Contact Jan at zorman@shakerlakes.org or (216) 321-5935 x229.
 
LAND MANAGEMENT
Come help control exotic plant species at the Nature Center, the dormant season is a great time to cut back exotic shrubs and collect native seeds. Contact Nate at beccue@shakerlakes.org or (216) 321-5935 x240.
