VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES SPRING 2010
WELCOME DESK
Welcome Desk/ Visitor Services Assistants help ensure our guests' experience at the Nature Center at Shaker Lakes is a positive one. Use your enthusiasm for the environment to greet and assist visitors, answer the phone, help with the gift shop, and prepare mailings.
OFFICE ASSISTANT
Help staff with data entry, mass mailings and taking inventory. Enter Nature Center programs onto community calendars posted on the internet. These tasks may be completed at home or at the Nature Center. Assist our Membership department by reviewing past records, compiling lists, preparing membership renewals and packets.
NATURAL RESOURCE MANAGEMENT OPPORTUNITIES
BUILDING AND TRAIL MAINTENANCE ASSISTANT
Assist with filling bird feeders, recycling, special building maintenance and landscape tasks as well as clean trail trenches and prune as needed.
LAND MANAGEMENT
Come help contrrol exotic plant species at the nature Center, the doormant season is a great time to cut back exotic shrubs and collect native seeds.
ANIMAL CARE ASSISTANT
Feed and care for our resident turtle, frog and snake that we use in educational programming.
BIRD BANDING / LANDSCAPE PROGRAM: MAY 2010 - SEPTEMBER 2010
Map an area around a bird net for quantifying vegetation. Assist in determining the types of vegetation (trees, shrubs, herbaceous, plants) and the relative density of each. Analyze vegetation data.
EDUCATION PROGRAMS
Summer Camp Volunteers Needed
The Nature Center is seeking volunteers to serve as Summer Camp Assistants. The minimum age for volunteers is 13 and youth are encouraged to apply. Group interviews for youth will be conducted at the following times:
Saturday, May 22nd 1pm - 3pm
Tuesday, June 1st 4pm - 6pm
Tuesday, June 8th 4pm - 6pm
Saturday, June 19th 10am - 12pm
Saturday, June 19th 1pm - 3pm
OUTDOOR ADVENTURE CLASS ASSISTANT
Work with children ages 3 to 10 years old, assist our naturalists with class supervision, activities, and craft preparation. Learn along with the kids as you participate in hikes and other activities. Call for specific class dates and times.
GENERAL DUTIES:
- Assist Center naturalists with nature classes for children ages 3 to 12.
- Help prepare craft projects.
- Keep track of children on hikes.
- Assist with anything that will make the classes more enjoyable for the children.
QUALIFICATIONS:
- Able and willing to talk/ interact with children
- Pleasant personality and ready smile
- Patience, enthusiasm, and dependability
- Prior experience with children
- Ability to hike in winter weather (snow, cold, etc.)
- Good physical condition is required for hikes
