SUMMARY:Paint the Grandeur of Winter with David Rankin
DESCRIPTION:Friday\, September 6 – Sunday\, September 8 | 10AM-4PM | Nature Center \nJoin David for a 3-day transparent watercolor workshop where you will paint Fall and Winter images. As the trees still glow with the last remnants of the fall color palette\, they make way for stark and dramatic winter colors. The forest\, gradually losing its leaves and vegetation\, exposes its underlying structure. Its grandeur is made increasingly stark and enchanting with the arrival of snow. David Rankin\, a master of transparent watercolor\, will share the techniques he uses to capture the grandeur of winter. \nThis hands-on workshop will run from September 6-September 8 from 10AM to 4PM each day. $350/person for this 3-day workshop. Supply list will be sent upon registration. \nRegistration Link: https://givebutter.com/davidrankin24

SUMMARY:Container Gardening Workshop
DESCRIPTION:Fall Container Gardening Workshop with Meadow City Nursery\nTuesday\, September 10th\, 7:00 PM – 8:30 PM EDT \nNo yard\, no problem!\nMany native plants thrive in outdoor planters\, where they can still provide food for birds and pollinators. In this hands-on workshop\, we will put together a container garden with three native plants\, which can live on a porch\, a balcony\, or in your yard. \nIncluded in the cost of the program are:\nYour choice of planter/bring your own planter (see below)\nGrowing media to fill planter\nYour choice of 3 native plants (in 4″ pots)\nGuidance/materials on plant selection and maintenance\n\n\nChoose your planter (photos below): Wooden whiskey barrel planter\, black fabric planter (can stand alone or be placed inside a larger decorative planter)\, or bring your own. If you bring your own planter\, we recommend one with a minimum diameter of 15″ and with drainage holes.\n\nIf you are planning to use a ceramic pot\, choose a high-quality glazed pot with a wide opening and tapered base. This gives water space to expand when frozen and reduces the risk of your pot cracking over the winter. Terra cotta pots are particularly susceptible to cracking.\n\nREGISTER: https://givebutter.com/Ve5XD2\n\n\n$45-$65 per person\, depending on planter chosen. Registration required.  \nThank you to our partner Meadow City Nursery!

SUMMARY:Hike & Run 2024
DESCRIPTION:Join us for the 20th Anniversary of Hike & Run!\nThis beloved event benefits environmental education and promotes health and wellness while celebrating the Shaker Parklands. Partial proceeds also support the Jenny Goldman Memorial Nature Outreach Fund\, which underwrites our Environmental Educator in Residence program that provides environmental education for hundreds of Cleveland school children each year. \nThe Hike & Run was created in memory of Jenny Goldman. Jenny was a budding young naturalist who loved and spent a great deal of time at the Nature Center at Shaker Lakes as a devoted volunteer. Sadly\, Jenny\, a Shaker Heights resident\, passed in a tragic car accident in 2004. Jenny’s wondrous spirit\, joy for nature\, and dedication to diversity live on through the Jenny Goldman Fund\, which underwrites the Environmental Educator in Residence program at the Nature Center. The program provides free environmental education for under-served urban youth. \nRun: 5k or 10k road race with chip timing and awards on a beautiful course around Shaker Lakes. SUMMARY:Intro to Yoga Workshop - Two Day Workshop
DESCRIPTION:Saturdays\, September 21and September 28 | 10:30AM – 12:00PM | Nature Center \nIf you have ever thought about starting a mindfulness practice like yoga but don’t know where to start\, this beginner’s workshop series is for you! \nThis workshop is for those new to yoga and interested in starting a regular practice or for those who have been away from their yoga practice and want to begin again. You will learn the basics of yoga to cultivate a fun\, safe and rewarding yoga practice. \nYou’ll leave this workshop series with the confidence to take classes in any setting. We will explore both the mental and physical aspects of meditation\, breathing techniques\, and foundational yoga poses. You will receive personalized attention and receive customized yoga pose variations to make you feel comfortable in the shape. \nYou do not need to be young\, athletic and/or flexible enough to twist your body into pretzel shapes to practice and fall in love with yoga. You just need to be willing to show up\, breathe and move. \nThe program will be taught by Cari Hickerson and Kathy Hayes\, both certified yoga teachers who have more than 15 years combined teaching experience. Both are currently instructors at Yoga Roots in Cleveland Heights and are residents of Cleveland Heights and Shaker Heights. Kathy has taught in Michigan\, Florida and Switzerland and currently volunteers leading Yoga for Fire Fighters locally. She also leads the outdoor summer yoga program in Shaker Heights. Cari is an evolutionary ecologist at John Carroll University and has been teaching yoga for 4.5 years at Yoga Roots. Cari has incorporated the practice of yoga in her biology classes to help students cope with test anxiety. Cari also enjoys teaching outdoor yoga when the Cleveland weather corporates. \nRegistration Link: https://givebutter.com/Tdp8r1
